The Dementia Zone

Welcome to The Dementia Zone! This is going to be your tour and resource guide through caregiving and memory loss.

As a caregiver, therapist and a certified geriatric care manager I’ve been dealing with dementia for more than 25 years. Over the years I’ve learned a great deal that has helped me both personally and professionally. And that’s what I am going to share with you.

Approach

This blog is going to be different from most. You don’t grow up watching The Three Stooges and then assume you can hit someone over the head with a frying pan! This isn’t going to be another blog where I tell you about the trials and tribulations of caring for mom or shouting out the latest and greatest medication in the pipelines. There’s enough of that already and my philosophy is if it’s not going to help you get through today, then why bother?

Another thing that this blog is not going to be is preachy. No telling you what you should be doing or how “I” do it best. Another thing that this site isn’t going to be is whiny. No “woe is me here.” You can go elsewhere to read those stories. No horror or funny stories about mom’s body functions (or rather how they aren’t functioning). I’ll leave that to others.

So, what are you going to get from reading this blog? Good old fashioned common sense the kind you would get from your best friend or your fairy godmother. Sometimes you will get a little bit of sarcasm thrown in for good measure and the more you read you’ll discover a warped sense of humor. I may appear critical at times but I’m just expressing a point of view.

I write like I talk. I’m a straight shooter and I call it like I see it. Being a caregiver is not for the meek–it takes a lot of strength, courage and perserverance and together we are going to find you the tools that you will need to get through this. You’re going to get a lot of information that you normally wouldn’t see and meet some interesting people who have designed some fabulous useful products. You are going to get the inside scoop on what’s going to help make your days and nights easier and I’m going to bring you ideas and information that is going to challenge your current way of thinking.

What You Can Expect

Each week I will showcase a product or service that you will find interesting and usefu. I stay up late at night scouring the Internet so you don’t have to. In the next few weeks we’ll start a caregiver book club and an advice column where you ask the questions and I will personally answer.

So there you have it. Stay tuned for the next article where I bring you the inside story of why an iceberg is like a person with dementia.
